Today’s Google Doodle celebrates the 162nd birthday of Hertha Marks Ayrton.
The doodle was created by artist Lydia Nichols and shows the famous scientist surrounded by ripples – one of her key findings and demonstrating her legacy as an engineer.
The doodle is shown on internet browsers in the UK, Egypt, Iceland, Qatar, Singapore, Spain and Tunisia.

Who was Hertha Marks Ayrton?

Phoebe Sarah Marks, who later adopted the name Hertha after the earth goddess, was an award-winning British mathematician, physicist, inventor and engineer, famous for her work on sand ripples and electric arcs.
She was born to a Polish Jewish seamstress mother Alice Moss and clockmaker father in Portsea, Portsmouth, on April 28, 1854.
Her father Levi Marks, who was also a jeweller, died when she was just seven years old, leaving her family – with eight children – in debt.
Hertha, who was known for her ‘fiery’ personality, was sent to a school in London, which was owned by her aunt Marion Harzog, when she was nine.
She went on to attend Girton College, University of Cambridge, in 1876, and passed the Cambridge University Examination for Women in 1874 with honours in both English and maths.
Cambridge did not give degrees to women at the time so she received this through the University of London instead.
Hertha married William Ayrton in 1885 and they had a child, Barbara Ayrton who went on to become a labour MP between 1945 and 1950 and a suffragist for Womens’ Rights. Barbara Ayrton’s son Michael Ayrton was a writer and artist.
In her lifetime, Hertha Marks Ayrton registered 26 different patents before dying in 1923, aged 69 from blood poisoning caused by an insect bite.

Important things she invented and discovered

1) Mathematical dividers
In 1884 Hertha patented her first major invention, an instrument used for dividing lines into a number of equal parts
2) Ayrton fan
In 1915, the scientist developed a device to blow away poisonous gases from the trenches, keeping soldiers fit. More than 100,000 of the fans were used on the Western Front.
3) Sand ripples
Hertha realised that ripples appear when waves wash over sand, which had previously been a scientific mystery.
4) Arc lamps and electrodes
In 1893, Hertha began looking at highly luminous discharges of electricity that would fire between two electrodes when gases ionize, known aselectric arcs. These ‘arc lamps’ were used as public lighting at the time but they would flicker and hiss on the streets. Her work led to fixing this issue by binding the arc together to form one constant whole.

How she raised the profile of womens’ rights

Hertha was the first women to read her own paper – The Origin and Growth of Ripple Mark – to the Royal Society in 1904 and received the Huighes Medal for her work on ripples and electric arcs. She is only one of two women to receive the award, which is only given for original discovery.
The scientist also took part in suffrage rallies in 1906 and 1913 and was the founding member of the International Federation of University Women and the National Union of Scientific Workers.
In 1899, Hertha was elected as the first woman member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.

Hertha Marks Ayrton, the British inventor, scientist and mathematician, is being celebrated with a Google Doodle on what would have been her 162nd birthday.
“Lydia Nichols’ doodle shows Ayrton framed by her breakthrough findings. Today, 162 years after her birth, we celebrate her legacy as engineer, mathematician, physicist, and inventor, her impact still rippling through the scientific community,” Google says.
Ayrton was born April 28, 1854, and died on August 23, 1923, at the age of 69.

1. She Was Born as the 3rd of 8 Children in Hampshire, England

Hertha Marks Ayrton was born as Phoebe Sarah Marks, the third child of eight to Levi Marks, a Polish Jewish watchmaker, and Alice Moss, a seamstress, according to her biography on the Agnes Scott College website.
Her father died in 1861, and she was adopted by her aunt at the age of nine.
Ayrton was agnostic. She denounced her Jewish religion and changed her name to Hertha, after the earth goddess featured in Algernon Charles Swineburn’s 1969 anti-religious poem.

Ayrton studied mathematics at Girton College, Cambridge University according to the Agnes Scott College’s Biography of Women Mathematicians.
Cambridge did not grant degrees to women when she completed her studies in 1880, so she completed an external examination and was awarded a degree from the University of London in 1881.

3. She Became the First Woman to Read Her Own Paper Before the Royal Society, But Was Denied Election as a Fellow

Ayrton published several studies of electrical arcs and became the first woman to read her own paper before the Royal Society, the British learned society for science, in 1904.

This simple observation was a scientific mystery until Hertha Marks Ayrton read ‘The Origin and Growth of Ripple Marks’ to the Royal Society in 1904. She was first woman to do so. Her words were then published, marking a permanent contribution to the canon of physical science and a victory over discrimination and exclusion.
Ayrton was nominated for admission to the prestigious society, but was elected because she was a married woman, according to the Institution of Engineering and Technology:
Her candidature was supported by some notable men of science, but when the council of the Royal Society met to discuss the issue, it was decreed as follows: We are of the opinion that married women are not eligible as Fellows of the Royal Society. Whether the Charters admit of the election of unmarried women appears to us to be very doubtful.
She presented papers before the Royal Society twice more, and was given its Hughes Medal, “for her experimental investigations on the electric arc, and also on sand ripples.” To this day she is only one of only two women to receive the award.
Ayrton was the first woman to be a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
She also fought for other women to receive recognition for their work. After Marie Currie’s husband received credit for the discovery of radium, Ayrton wrote in The Westminster Gazette, “Errors are notoriously hard to kill, but an error that ascribes to a man what was actually the work of a woman has more lives than a cat.”

4. She Invented the Ayrton Fan to Repel Gas Attacks During World War I

In addition to her work on the electric arc and sand ripples, she invented the Ayrton fan, which was used to repel gas attacks during World War I.
The British Army distributed 104,000 of the fans to troops on the Western front, according to the Imperial War Museum:
It was in daily use at the Front since May, 1916; principally for clearing-outs, shell-holes, mine craters, etc., of the foul gases that always accumulate in them under shell fire. These can now be cleared in from a few seconds to a few minutes, and can therefore be consolidated immediately after taking instead of having to be left for hours, and sometimes for days, before they can be entered. They are made of waterproof canvas stiffened with cane, with a wooden handle. The blade has a semi-rigid centre, with loose end and side flaps, and the back has an extra very limited hinge in it to enable it to accomodate itself to the varying shapes of the backs of parapets, corners of traverses etc. They are 3 feet 6 inches long, have a blade 15 inches square, weigh less than 1lb., can be folded and carried in the braces behind the pack.
“At the outbreak of the First World War she began to apply the theories she had developed about oscillations in water to the movement of air. With her habitual practical turn of mind, this was quickly put to use in the invention of the Ayrton Flapper Fan,” the Institution of Engineering and Technology explains. “She encountered some difficulty in getting the military to consider her idea, but her invention was eventually adopted and used to clear the trenches of poisonous gas. After the war, she continued with her work in this field until her death in 1923.”

Hertha Ayrton married physicist and engineer William Edward Ayrton in 1885, according to her biography on the Agnes Scott College’s website. She studied under him and assisted on his research before working on her own projects.
William Ayrton died in 1908 at the age of 61. The couple had a daughter, Barbara Ayrton, who would become a suffragist and a Labour politician who served in the British Parliament from 1945 to 1950.

The Doodle appears at the top of Google’s search page and today marks the 162nd birthday of Hertha Marks Ayrton.
A Google statement says: “Today we celebrate her legacy as engineer, mathematician, physicist, and inventor, her impact still rippling through the scientific community.”
However, there’s some confusion over where in Sussex she died.
A YouTube video, Wikipedia and some other websites says she died from blood poisoning on August 26 1923 at New Cottage, North Lancing.
But other websites, including other Wikipedia pages, say she died in Bexhill.
Wherever in the county she did pass away, her work is recognised as pioneering.
She was an engineer, mathematician, physicist, and inventor and was awarded the Hughes Medal by the Royal Society for her work on electric arcs and ripples in sand and water.

Hertha Marks Ayrton became the first woman to present her own work to the U.K.’s Royal Society when she stood in front of the scientific academy in 1904 and read “The Origin and Growth of Ripple Marks.” Until then, scientists were baffled by the creation of ridges in sand when a wave washes over a beach.
To celebrate Ayrton’s scientific discoveries and victories over discrimination, Google has honored the British engineer, mathematician, physicist and inventor with a Doodle, on the 162nd anniversary of her birth. In addition to unlocking the mystery of ripples, Ayrton also became and expert on electric arcs, widely used in lighting at the time.

Hertha Marks Ayrton was an award-winning English engineer, mathematician, inventor and physicist,  best known for her ground-breaking work on electric arcs and sand ripples.
Born in Portsea, Portsmouth, on April 28, 1854, she was of Jewish parentage and the third of eight children. She was the daughter of a seamstress, while her father was a clockmaker and jeweller who left his family in debt when he passed away in 1861.
She went to live in London at the age of nine and was taught at a school owned by her aunt Marion Harzog. She adopted the name Hertha in her teenage years, after the ancient Germanic earth Goddess.
The young scientist attended Girton College in 1876, part of the University of Cambridge, famous for pioneering women’s education and the first residential college for women established in England.

The inventor

Ayrton was also a life-long inventor and in 1884 she patented a line divider, an instrument for dividing a line into any number of equal parts which could be used by artists and architects.
The device was unveiled at the Exhibition of Women’s Industries and was her first major invention.
In 1915, Ayrton invented a fan to clear poisonous gases away from the trenches, with over 100,000 fans dispatched to the Western Front.
From 1884 until her death in 1923, Hertha had registered 26 different patents.

Electric arcs

Ayrton is also celebrated for her work on electric arcs, a highly luminous and intensely hot discharge of electricity between two electrodes, which she began researching in 1893.
Arc lamps were widely used for public lighting at the time but their tendency to flicker and hiss was a problem.

When a wave washes over sand, ripples will appear, with Ayrton analysing these patterns when she started caring for her sick husband in 1901.
This simple observation was a scientific mystery until Ayrton read "The Origin and Growth of Ripple Marks" to the Royal Society in 1904 [the first woman to do so] when she received the Hughes Medal for her work on ripples and the electric arc.
“To anyone who, for the first time, sees a great stretch of sandy shore covered with innumerable ridges and furrows, as if combed with a giant comb, a dozen questions must immediately present themselves,” she wrote.
“How do these ripples form? Are they made and wiped out with every tide, or do they take a long time to grow, and last for many tides? What is the relation between the ripple and the waves to which they owe their existence? And a host of others too numerous to mention.”

The US Court of Appeal has reinstated the four-game 'Deflategate' suspension of New England Patriots' superstar quarterback Tom Brady.
Brady is alleged to have used under-inflated balls before an NFL play-off game last year.
The 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in New York reversed a federal judge's ruling from September.
The appeals court ruled that in imposing the suspension, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell properly exercised his discretion under a collective bargaining agreement.

The split decision by a three-judge panel may end the legal debate over the scandal that led to months of football fans arguing over air pressure and the reputation of one of the league's top teams.

"I am troubled by the Commissioner's decision to uphold the unprecedented four-game suspension," Katzmann said. "The Commissioner failed to even consider a highly relevant alternative penalty."

TORONTO - Drake's summer is shaping up to be a busy one.
The "Hotline Bling" rapper has announced plans for a 32-date North American tour timed to the release of his new album.
"Summer Sixteen Tour" will be headlined by the Toronto-born performer and Atlanta-based rapper Future.
The duo are currently on the Billboard charts with their collaboration track "Jumpman."
The tour will make three stops in Canada, including dates in Toronto on July 31 and Aug. 1 and in Vancouver on Sept. 17.
The rapper will also host his annual OVO Fest on July 29 in Toronto with a roster of special guests and the OVO Bounce basketball tournament.
Drake is ramping up for the release of his fourth studio album, "Views from the 6," on Friday.
Late Sunday, he unveiled the album's cover art, which shows him sitting atop Toronto's CN Tower with his legs dangling over the edge.
"To the city I love and the people in it.... Thank you for everything," he wrote on social media..
