Ghostbusters 2016 film news

Ghostbusters is an upcoming American supernatural comedy film directed by Paul Feigand written by Katie Dippold and Feig. It is a direct follow-up and a reboot of theGhostbusters franchise. It stars Melissa McCarthyKristen WiigKate McKinnon, andLeslie Jones as the title characters. The film is scheduled for a July 15, 2016 release.

Plot[edit]

Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) are a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. A few years later, Gilbert lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia University, but her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia. When ghosts invade Manhattan, Gilbert reunites with Yates, teaming up with a nuclear engineer, Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), and a subway worker, Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones), to save the world from a mysterious evil and powerful demon known as Rowan (Neil Casey) who can exercise control over human forms.[citation needed]

On August 2, 2014, it was reported that Paul Feig was in talks to direct a reboot of the franchise, featuring women in the lead roles.[5] On September 17, Dan Aykroyd told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted to do a Ghostbusters-style universe in line with what Marvel had done with its own shared universe.[6] On October 8, The Hollywood Reporter announced that screenwriter Katie Dippold and director Feig would be writing the script.[7][8] Feig also confirmed that it would not follow the last two films and would be a total reboot of the franchise with all female leads.[9] On January 15, 2015, when talking with Empire, Feig revealed that the film would be shot and set in New York City.[10] In February 2015, Feig revealed that he was inspired by The Walking Dead.[11] The first official trailer was released on March 3, 2016.

On September 7, 2014, original Ghostbusters star Bill Murray was asked at 2014 TIFF by Toronto Star whether he was in favor of the female-Ghostbusters reboot or not, and Murray said, "I'm fine with it, I would go to that movie, and they'd probably have better outfits, too."[12] He also even suggested his fan casting for the film, which included Melissa McCarthyKristen WiigLinda Cardellini and Emma Stone.[12] Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were also rumored to be casting in the film.[12] On October 13, it was announced that Gillian Anderson wanted to play one of the female leads as she said, "Paul Feig, cast me now!"[13] On October 14, it was revealed that originalGhostbusters star Murray might make a cameo in the film.[14] On December 10, comedian Rebel Wilson visited Today, where she was asked about a role in Ghostbusters, on which she said, "I have had a meeting, I would even do that without the money truck. I'd do that for free."[15]
On January 9, 2015, THR reported that Melissa McCarthy was in early talks to join the film, but her deal might not be done due to her scheduling conflicts with Mike & Molly and the film The Boss.[16] Jillian Bell and Cecily Strong were both in eyes for the key roles in the film.[17] On January 27, director Feig tweeted a photo of his lead cast for the Ghostbusters reboot, which included Kristen WiigMelissa McCarthyKate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, while some sources said they were still in talks.[18] In February 2015, Feig revealed that he and screenwriter Dippold had written a key role for Cecily Strong and they wanted her in the film.[19] In March 2015, talking to Digital Spy,Sigourney Weaver revealed that she had offered to play a role to Paul Feig, on which he said, "We'd love to have you in it" but after Weaver told him she wanted the role of Slimer, he said, "he didn't think that would work out."[20]
On June 8, 2015, Chris Hemsworth joined the cast as the team's receptionist, Kevin, a character similar to Annie Potts's Janine Melnitzfrom the original films.[21] Emma Stone passed on the film because "a franchise (was) a big commitment" and "It just didn't feel like the right time for (her)."[22] On July 7, 2015, The Wrap confirmed that Andy GarcíaMichael K. WilliamsMatt Walsh, Cecily Strong, and real-life news anchor Pat Kiernan had joined the cast. García would play the Mayor of New York City, Williams would play a character named Hawkins, Walsh to play a character called Rourke, while Kiernan would play a news anchor in the film.[23] On July 7, 2015, Deadlinereported that Neil Casey had joined the cast as Rowan, the film's villain.[24] On July 14, 2015, Aykroyd was confirmed to appear in the film for a cameo.[25] In August 2015, Murray was confirmed to appear in film for a cameo.[26] Also in August, heavy-metal legend Ozzy Osbourne was confirmed for a cameo in the film.[27] In September 2015, Ernie HudsonAnnie Potts and Sigourney Weaver were confirmed to appear in the film.[28][29][30]

Filming[edit]

Filming was set to shoot in New York City.[10] Some portion of the film would also be shot in BostonMassachusetts in spring.[31] Later in March 2015, it was confirmed that sets were being constructed in Boston for the shoot to begin on June 18, 2015, tentatively.[32]
Principal photography on the film began on June 17, 2015 in Boston.[33][34] On June 29, 2015, Feig tweeted the costume of the four Ghostbusters.[35] Filming also took place in Chinatown, Boston for a few days in early July 2015.[36] On August 1, 2015, aside filming, the lead cast of the film visited the patients at the Tufts Medical Center in Boston.[37] On August 17, 2015, Hemsworth was spotted filming some scenes on the Ghostbusters fully equipped bike.[38] After finishing filming at the old Naval Air Station in South Weymouth, it began in Tribeca in New York City on September 12.[39][40] On September 15, filming was being taken place in Waltham.[41] Filming was also spotted outside of Columbia University in New York.[40] Filming wrapped on September 19, 2015 in New York City.[42]

Release[edit]

Ghostbusters' original release date in the United States was July 22, 2016,[43] but the film's release was brought forward a week to July 15.[44]
